Allergies continue to plague me, likely the result of the probable oil based paint on the kitchen cupboards. Oil based paints were banned for sale in Canada for all but certain industrial applications starting in 2010, so either this was old paint still kicking around the maintenance shed here or it was purchased in the USA. The VOC chemical group in oil based paints contribute to respiratory illnesses and heart disease, so of course here I am living with that paint in my place. Sigh..... I will get some Claritin today and see if I can't get rid of some of this reaction. As far as getting rid of the actual paint it is a case of "too late now". As soon as it warms up enough to open a few windows we can dissipate the fumes far more effectively. In the meantime my husband seems to have been able to fix the distance between the set points on the thermostat so that the heat doesn't come on and shut off every few minutes. Slowly we are making the place fit for human habitation. It hasn't been easy. We still love the space itself but it is costing us a small fortune to make it work for us. To think this unit is in the best condition of all the ones we viewed is downright scary!
So, enough of that now! Yesterday was a wonderful day. My friend came from Moose Jaw and we spent the day together. We ate out. We mall crawled. (And yes, I survived any and all temptations to purchase any more clothes! teehee) We went to see The Second Exotic Marigold Hotel. It was hilarious and a lot of fun, if just a tad too long. So glad we did that. We went to a little liquidation store where my husband will be able to get some the restaurant quality cooking pots he would like to replace our old pots with. She pointed out some of the better Indian restaurants and took me on a tour of the teacher's store where we had a lot of fun checking out the puppets for her Sunday school classes. She is a school teacher and also a family pastor and has a very interesting life. It was so much fun. I was so full from lunch and a mid-afternoon diet cola that for supper I ate a slice of bread and peanut butter and 3 prunes! It was a lot of fun just poking around. The day ended watching a couple of great boxing matches on tv, sitting with my husband and planning our day today between rounds. We were supposed to go to Maple Creek to see the lady whose job my husband now holds. She has fast progressing ALS and it is a dire situation. Due to my allergies and a committment her husband has this afternoon, we will go next weekend instead. My husband is going to volunteer to do the service there for them next weekend so that her priest husband can have a break. What hell he is also going through watching his wife slip away from him in body, and yet continuing with a clear mind she can no longer express to him. Sometimes life's a bitch. To me she is a living Job and I can only pray that in the next life she is given God's most amazing rewards along with all those others who have suffered so terribly in this life.
Feeling more awake now, so off to get dressed and start rearranging my room for my new desk to be set up in there this afternoon...or tomorrow. My husband is so tired we are having morning prayers at home today and he has rearranged his days off for this week so he can get more moving in accomplished. We have spent so much time buying and building cabinets, cleaning things we should not have had to clean and readjusting bed and awake times to accommodate his new job, some of the moving in that would have been done by now has been left for days like today.
Here's to a day or two of accomplishing much without a lot of stress and without having to spend any more money on this place.

One Bane of Every Move
As much as I enjoy moving in general, there is one problem that crops up each time, about a week to ten days after the move in. Unfortunately it has happened once again.
I have so many allergies and it always takes time for my body to deal with the stir up of cardboard lint, new living quarters' dust, the change of air quality and, in winter, the exposure to different levels of cold air. Yes, I actually have a documented allergy to cold air...and I live on the prairies....how dumb am I???
So over the past few days the allergy reactions began. I had a wee itch on my chest the other day, gave it a teensy scratching to relieve it and whatever moving dust was under my fingernail caused a severe reaction. A patch of hot red appeared where I had scratched and grew over 3 days to the size of two silver dollars. As of today most of it has blistered, turned brown and peeled off again, so that is great. I have contact skin allergies appearing on both hands and am thankful I thought far enough ahead before moving to get a tube of the prescription cream that generally gets rid of those symptoms in a couple of weeks. My sinuses have been doing well, very little dryess or soreness, but yesterday the bittiest bit of dry cough started and this morning when I woke up my lungs were so congested I could hardly breathe. Keeping active today will help that, but I am going to have to be careful or some virus or bacteria will take advantage and I will end up with bronchitis or pneumonia again.
Remedy: staying warm, drinking as much water per day as my body can handle, resting and sleeping sitting up for a week, using the proper cream on my skin, applying generous amounts of mentholated ointment to my nose and neck and continuing to clean and clean and clean the townhouse every day. My husband has forbidden me to vacuum the cobwebs from the basement rafters and will do it himself tonight so that I can do laundry tomorrow. Yeah....like he needs to be taking time to do that when he has so many things of his own here needing attention. Well, bless him for being so considerate of my health. He is a good man.
This too shall pass, but the sooner we can finish the move in and get the cardboard boxes struck and out of here and vacuum out the rest of the basement, the sooner I will be well once again.
Got the pottery display cabinet placed this morning. It makes a nice little divider between living and dining rooms. The glass has all been cleaned and the pottery put on display. I thought I had slashed and burned with my collection of various ornaments from around the world before we left our parish, but now that I am basically all unpacked I can see I still have far too many and will do another cull once the upstairs bedrooms/office spaces are completed. In the huge rectory we were in previously it didn't appear there were as many little items on display as I now realize there were. Sigh..... When I had to throw out a very expensive and beloved piece of pottery yesterday that had been badly damaged in the move, all I felt was relief instead of sorrow. That tells me I am ready to part with more things than I thought I was. YAY!
This move has taken so much out of us and made us realize how much unnecessary junk we are hauling around....precious junk but really junk none the less....I think we will try to live in this place for as many years as possible, then just walk away and leave it all in place for someone else to enjoy!! haha Were it that simple.....

An Antsy Sort of Day
I survived our first early morning rising. If we continue to be disciplined to go to bed as early as we did last night I think we will both be just fine with this schedule. Discipline....yeah....not so good at that.....
My husband packed up his computer and lunch and all his daily personal "stuff" into a good sized backpack this morning, donned his winter ice climbing pants and hoofed it to work. He found a shortcut yesterday that reduces the walk time to 15 minutes so his lunch won't likely freeze in the -40C windchill. It is actually only -30C before factoring in the windchill so he will be fine. He was so excited he was actually trembling all over as he left. hahaha I am so happy he will be working in an office filled with colleagues and will not be working all alone day after day. He has only had to wait for about 30 years for that to happen. A few times when he was doing carpentry he would be in a shop with some other tradesmen but not that often. This will be great for him. I am excited about that as it will help him keep his CFS under better control than it was over the past year.
So, I have only about 2 more boxes to unpack that contain things I have space for. That will take about a half hour to sort out and then I am in antsy limbo land wondering what to do next. We have reached the point where I need my husband's help to do anything substantial toward completing the move in. This is always the stress day of move in for me....the limbo part where I have a ton of energy and nowhere to expend it that furthers the overall project. Now that my husband is back at work full time I am going to have a long wait for his first days off to get major projects completed.
I decided that instead of spending the day fuming and getting stressed, I am going to take a long hot shower and do my hair, watch a bit of tv, read a bit, file my nails......aaaaah, who am I kidding??? I am going to end up having a quick shower and letting my hair dry however it dries and head to the basement to fix up a useable space around the appliances so I can get started on the laundry. The dryer vent hose has unattached itself from the dryer so I will have to put that on before I do anything else about it. I want to vacuum the space and set up the card table, find a good place to lay out the detergent and fabric softener etc.
Being a project person I simply can't rest until the project is completed. Wish I wasn't like that but I am. The disarray in this place is getting to me now so it is time to do something, anything, I don't need my husband's help with and get this show on the road! Forward march!!

NOOOOOO....NOT 6:30am!!!!
My husband had a pre-work meeting with the bishop today to discuss details like hours of work, days off, holidays etc. All the news is good except for one little thing: in order to get to the office on time my husband (and I, maker of his lunches) will now be getting up at 6:30am on all office days! NOOOO!!! We are NOT morning people, not by any stretch of the imagination! hahahahaha Ooh, it is going to be grumpy going for the first couple of weeks of this shocking change!! hahaha I am going to be making his lunches the night before whenever possible, on the off chance that will mean I can sleep a bit later into the mornings!! It all starts tomorrow!
In happier work-related news: he now gets 6 weeks of holidays! He will have the month of August off and then about 10 days between Christmas and New Years and 4 other days he can take when it best suits scheduling. He has 2 mandatory weeks of study leave as well, which in times past he has found more refreshing than tiring. These are the perks of the otherwise impossible task that is this particular job. The other good news is that the trip to Africa in May is still happening. If there is political unrest in Burundi due to the elections there, the location of the conference will be changed, possibly to Tanzania. Either way, Lord willing, he gets to do a bit more world travelling. I am very happy for him. Later this week the announcement will come down as to what parish he will be at for a few days a month as part of the job share.
He will not start there for a couple of months so has until that time to do as he likes on Sundays. It will give us an opportunity to visit some of the other parishes here in the city; fun for us and helpful later in his job. Maybe we will even get back to our former church once more before the madness begins in earnest in May.
Outside a blizzard is raging, inside we are happy to have carved a path through all the mess in our cozy townhouse...at least it will be cozy, in theory, once we get the rest of the window curtains up to keep out the incredible draft caused by the huge panes of glass. haha My china cabinets are full now. Tomorrow I will be able to arrange most of the rest of the living and dining room furniture. Then we can start on the offices at the next opportunity. I will have to cool my jets and work in the basement, cleaning and doing laundry, until my husband gets his next free hours to help me again when he isn't too exhausted. I can grit my teeth and bear it, yes I can. He has worked so hard thus far.
Time for bed....and only 3 hours earlier than I am used to. However, I am determined to be wide awake and ready to cheerlead for him at 6:30am, have his lunch ready and then be ready to crawl back into bed for awhile for some cheat sleep!

Small Successes
Very slowly order is emerging from the chaos of our townhouse. This morning I will vaccuum the area where the china cabinets will go and we will push them into place. My husband just has the second hutch to assemble and that will be his main task in the early hours of today. Once that is done I can empty almost every box remaining on the main floor.
My spatial relations are terrible, but as I looked at the size of the various cabinets and pieces of furniture a plan finally began to take place in my muddled brain and I think I have the living space planned out okay. Yay!
We moved the tea and food storage cabinet into the kitchen and discovered my idea to make an L shape of it and the island would work very well. A new blind, a CLEAN blind, now graces the kitchen window and after I took an old paring knife with the point broken off and scraped out some dirt along the bottom of the baseboards, the kitchen is now a useable workspace. Every little set of cupboards has bags of rice or flour or wheat flakes tucked in behind the casserole dishes and mixing bowls due to the size restrictions each space, but as long as we know where everything is the arrangement doesn't have to make sense to anyone else. "Makin' it work take a little longer...makin' it work takes a little time...", to quote the old song.
I took my first drive around the area successfully yesterday and bought groceries. On the first day of decent weather I will wander over to the pharmacy a few blocks away and get my prescriptions moved down here. It isn't any farther to the nearest grocery store, pharmacy and clinic than it was in our last town of residence so on nice days I can still have a specific destination for my walks out of doors.
Well, there is still a lot left to do around here so I should go and start working. The laptop looks so funny balanced on a set up of overturned chairs and cardboard. So grateful for the good wireless service so I can stay in touch until our desks and computers are set up in the office upstairs.
Lots of good things to come.....

Mr. Fiskit Strikes Again
I am grateful again today for my husband's ability to do carpentry and home maintenance tasks. There is no window above the sink here and trying to do dishes in the dark is not fun. Now I have a small light installed above the sink so I can see to wash dishes and to save electricity by shutting off the overhead fixture.
The island for the kitchen is nearly finished despite the missing hardware parts. He has figured out a way to string the internet cables from the massive mess of wires in the basement from previous tenants. Once our desks arrive today and can be assembled he will be able to get our internet hooked up for our desktop computers. He has the curtain rods ready to put up at some point later today. He worked with the cable tv tech this morning to ensure the programme packages we ordered actually appear on our tv. He has been in touch with the phone company to fix up a few problems with the installation and features.
It is not even 10am and he has accomplished an awful lot. It is going to be a very busy day now as he has meetings for work scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, even though he doesn't actually start this job until the next day. I am hoping that I can utilize my time alone to get some of the rest of the dishes and kitchen utensils into the cabinets he has put together. If we can get the bases of the china cabinets put into their places by this evening then if he doesn't get the hutches done right away at least some of the dishes will be out of the boxes and out of sight.
I am going grocery shopping for the first time here later this morning. I am going to look for some curtains for my bedroom after a disappointing search yesterday. First time driving alone in my new city. Wish it wasn't another bitterly cold day, but spring is soon on the way....right? Brrrrr...I do hope so!

Balm in the Desert
This morning we woke up to a much warmer day. We decided to take advantage of that, plus the fact that this is our one and only "free" Sunday before my husband begins his work on Wednesday and head out to our former church for this morning's service.
This is our church home in terms of where my husband was supported for ordination, sponsored by this congregation. Their present priest was my husband's assistant in our last parish and so going there felt very much like returning home. We could go happily, knowing that the bishop was taking charge of services himself in our former parish for their first Sunday between priests.
It was an excellent service, great sermon, good music and the icing on the cake was being called to the front at the end of the service for the laying on of hands and a heartfelt prayer about sending us out once again from their midst to another new place of ministry.
Moving, as much as I enjoy it, is difficult in terms of leaving people we love and living surrounded by mess for the several weeks it always seems to take to get unpacked and resettled. So this morning's service, followed by soup and buns in the church basement, surrounded by old friends, was definitely balm to our weary souls.
We hope and pray the bishop was able to bring encouragement and hope to our former parish regarding their future and news of a possible new priest coming soon. Lord, protect our dear friends and parishioners there and keep them encouraged and excited about the future and the experimental changes they need to try out to bond them closer and help them to grow as churches.
A wonderful blessing that happened this morning was meeting up with a young fellow at the church we attended who used to live in our former parish while attending Bible college there. He came to our church quite often in his last year at the school. He was part of a different denominational church at that time. He was so excited to see my husband and to tell him that his time in our church changed his entire life. Now he is a server and crucifer in the church we were at today and is very happy to be serving the Lord there. What an encouragement. You never know when things you say or do effect someone else's life so completely. Wow!
Now my husband is putting together the portable island we purchased for what I call our "mini-kitchen". Some of the hidden cams were missing from the hardware package but he is inventive enough to come up with other ways to put it together. He is incredibly creative and talented and I am some impressed!! Next will be the bottom of the second china cabinet. He has to clear a space by getting these pieces together and out of the way so that when the hutches and new desks arrive tomorrow there will be room enough to put them together as well. Hopefully by next weekend we will have the other internet plugs hooked up and our other computers put up on our desks.
Tomorrow, not only are those deliveries happening, the tv cable tech is also coming to install a more up to date box so we can get the HD packages we requested. I can't wait! The carpet installer the management company here hires is also coming to replace a square of carpet in one bedroom that is covered in blue nail polish! Hoping he does make it because we want to get that room finished and are planning to place a large file cabinet over that very spot. From my mouth to God's ear.....may all go as planned!
I am happy. We must be where we are supposed to be or I would not be this happy after 5 years elsewhere in a bigger house and surrounded by the church family there. It will be interesting to see how this next phase of our life's journey goes.
