Our friend's wish for a "wisdom year" for us has taken root in our thought processes. We are starting by dividing our year into sections, based on upcoming events in my husband's work, and at the end of each section we will evaluate his job, our spiritual lives, my level of contentment and various other decision making criteria as we seek better discernment for our future, immediate and longer term. I think it is going to be a necessary and fulfilling process for us. This is not a year to simply drift along with the tides of fate. We are both very aware of that.
A number of people have asked me what I am going to do for personal enjoyment this year. What regular activity am I going to take on for myself to feel fulfilled and happy? That is a question that stresses me out to the point of misery, particularly when the same people ask me time after time, conversation after conversation, email after email. BUT this year I have an answer all ready!! YES! THIS year, at least for the first six months, my fulfillment is going to be in actually dropping most of my personal committments and making myself available to help my husband as often as he needs me. I did this one other time, the three years he was in seminary, and it was one of the happiest, most personally fulfilling times of my life. It is time to do it again for awhile. Thinking about it is what gives me peace of mind and heart. Tomorrow I will once again accompany him to the office for a second huge day of filing. I am taking on tracking his mileage on the job and making up some spread sheets for a few of his other work related activities. So many people have suggested I need to get back to doing various sorts of volunteer work and so that is what I am going to do....for my husband at his office. (Think about that concept of volunteer work though: if I was physically capable of doing all the volunteer work people have suggested, I would be physically capable of working for pay...which at this time is far more important/necessary for my future than any form of volunteer work. Sad to say, but I can't afford the luxury of being a full time volunteer any more.)
Spending time assisting my husband will be my volunteer work. It will not be a daily or sometimes even weekly committment, but it will be helpful to more people than just ourselves and will be fulfilling for me personally. This is one committment I am feeling great about this year.
I have also been thinking about what sorts of wisdom have been imparted to me over the years and what has struck me is how much solid wisdom I have aquired, or at least aspired to, from various members of my husband's family:
From my sister in law: face reality and deal with it.
From my mother in law: grin and bear it and if you can't grin, bear it anyway.
From my father in law: you CAN fight city hall and even if you don't win you have the satisfaction of having tried.
From a cousin: take the blame for the small things, even if they aren't actually your fault. If upset people have a scapegoat and an apology for something that is actually rather trivial or insignificant, be that willing scapegoat and then everyone can put the problem aside and move on.
From an uncle in law: keep your sanity by seeing the ridiculousness all around you. It will keep you "chill". Sarcastic humour is a fabulous way to remain calm in the face of stupidity, real or imagined.
From my husband: when a problem looks impossible, continue to look for a solution. There almost always is one when you apply a combination of logic and creativity.
Yes, I have learned and continue to learn amazing wisdom from this family I find myself a part of. These sorts of wisdom bear more thinking about and more practising of in a year deemed a "wisdom year".
I have to say that I am more excited about this coming year than I have been about the past several years. My confusion about how to spend my time seems to have resolved rather quickly since figuring out my need to be available to my husband and work with him more, like I have in the past. Just because he is not behind the pulpit on a regular basis doesn't mean we can't work together any more. Last year the most satisfying events for me were the weekend seminars we presented together, the weekends when I helped do the long distance driving when my husband had out of town meetings, and the times of prayer specifically about times of ministry together. Come next autumn I may be able to return to choir and more consistent ministry in my church, but for now it is time to step back and enjoy the times I get to spend helping my husband. I have felt depressed this week ever since he went back to work after the holiday season. Having him around is something I rarely get tired of, so if we can do a few more necessary jobs together it will be a happy time for both of us.
A "wisdom year": thank you friend for the idea. It is going to make 2018 very interesting and who knows where the idea will end up leading us?
And now....off to do a bit of retail therapy with the last of my Christmas gift money I have been saving for just such a day as this! I have to start scouring the city for a long sleeved, brown, cotton turtleneck shirt and I think it is going to be extremely difficult to find. I have seen them in every colour except brown lately, but surely some store somewhere in this city will have a brown one tucked away on the back of a rack. Worth a try anyway. It is overcast outside, chillier than it has been the past two days, there is a fair amount of ice on the sidewalks...a perfect day to take the bus right from my front door to the doors of Cornwall Centre. If I can't find what I want there, then next week I will start making the tour of the outlying shopping malls. A quest.......I LOVE a good retail quest!!! hahahaha

His Mother’s Son!
My son not only arrived home from his holiday at 2am, just before the snow arrived in the New York City area, he was able to get to and from a job today and thoroughly enjoyed being out in the terrible storm. He wrote to tell us it was “spectacular!”
I admit to being incredibly envious that he got to experience it first hand. By mid afternoon there were over 9 inches of snow in Manhattan where he was working, and over 11 inches of snow outside his home in Brooklyn. The snowfall came down in a matter of a few hours. The icy cold will follow tomorrow, but our son is not daunted by it because he grew up on the prairies.
We are delighted he enjoyed his first day back home, working with nearly no sleep last night, huge dump of snow, winds, delayed trains and all. Just wishin’ I could have seen the storm as well.....I love being part of “big weather”.

That Was Quick!
This morning I have all ready received a call from my doctor to come in for results from yesterday’s lab work. I am going on Monday morning. It is my husband’s day off but I am not keen to wait. These results include thyroid tests as we attempt to discover the reason for the giant leap in my cholesterol numbers in only a six month period last year. If the amount of oatmeal I have been eating, the dietary changes along with the exercise, are not helping then there is a problem elsewhere in my system.
I have learned a good lesson from our family member who is a two time cancer survivor: report any and all possible symptoms of anything, any physiological change no matter how small or ethereal in nature, immediately to your doctor. Don’t stop testing, pestering, tracking until the causes are diagnosed. Go for test results immediately. Start tackling the medical issues as soon as they arise. Don’t wait! Face reality with as much courage as possible. Take the meds. Endure the treatments. Don’t give in to the fear that would tempt you away from finding out there is a problem until it has worsened. Deal with all the symptoms NOW!
Thank you Lord for this good lesson and for our family.

Back In The USA
Thanks so much to all of you from my son and from us, you who were praying or sending positive thoughts his way about his return to the USA. He texted us a half hour ago to let us know he had cleared the border at immigration and is back now on the bus for the lengthy journey home. He should arrive back in NYC about two hours before a major Atlantic storm hits his city. He should arrive home just before 2 am EDT. Thank you friends and thank you Lord!!
He had a marvellous time in Montreal. He is intensely grateful to his various casual employers who ensured he had enough work and therefore enough funding to return to Canada for a badly needed holiday. He has so many friends in Montreal he was not wanting for entertainment and visiting. His dad and I are very grateful he didn't feel obligated to return to Regina with us and endure the horrible cold and the boredom here. He has been so faithful to do that...year after year of coming to Saskatchewan for Christmas, various locations, and trying to pretend he wasn't bored silly. hahaha I never understood parents who put the emotional screws to their kids and guilt them into returning home at certain times of the year. Wierd in my opinion and also very selfish. I am selfish enough without adding in such treatment of my son. We all had a wonderful time this holiday season.
In other news: really enjoyed the movie Wonder today. Yes it is kind of sappy and there are some holes in the story, but good grief, it was so nice to see a truly feel good movie, as well as a movie where the child actors got to act like actual kids and not overly mature mini-adults. I admit I didn't expect to enjoy it all that much, but it was quite good. The audience was composed mostly of kids and their parents. I was kind of nervous about that. I am talking about elementary school aged kids, on the lower spectrum of age and grade and I was concerned there would be a lot of talk and fussing about, but honestly, for most of the film you could have heard a pin drop in that theatre. The kids all behaved themselves. The tiny children sitting directly in front of my friend and I were incredibly quiet, well behaved, engrossed in the story despite the nearly 2 hours in length and the fact that it really was more of an older child and adult movie. I was so impressed I just had to tell their dad how great it was sitting behind them. He was pleased and so I am glad I did it. You never know if you should talk to complete strangers about their kids, but he needed to know how much the rest of us appreciated their attention to the movie.
Had dinner with my friend afterward at London Belle. We had the steak sandwich with onion rings. My steak was more medium than medium rare, but it was so tender and tasty I didn't care. It was only 6 oz, perfect for me, and came with a teeny slice of garlic toast topped with a sweet tomato chutney. It was delicious and with the large slices of onion in the rings it was just the right amount of food. A glass of rather average red wine washed it all down just fine. It was happy hour so our 6oz of wine only cost five dollars per glass and I am glad as that is about how much the wine was worth, hahahaha. Steak and shiraz....just perfect!
My husband had a very good day at work again today. He is feeling better and better about his job again now that he has had a decent break away. It was good for him. His stomach seems to be settling down more each day so he is encouraged about his health as well.
I went over to the lab at 6:45 am today for my 3 month cholesterol testing. Sigh....how I wish I could have managed to get it done BEFORE the Christmas week holiday, when my diet and exercise plan went right out the window for about 8 days in a row...maybe even 10! I expect I will get a call from the doctor's office either tomorrow or Friday for an appointment next week. Whether the numbers are good or bad, we will be meeting so I don't have to go into shock when I get the call to come in. PRAYING like ten bears that the past 3 months of oatmeal ingestion will have assisted in the lowering of those numbers. Other than Christmas break I have exercised my heart out day after day. Stupid cholesterol........
Well, I hardly slept last night so I am going to bed at 9am...a half hour from now. I know I was worrying all night about my lab tests today. How dumb is that? It isn't like I can do anything to change the results by staying awake fretting, but I couldn't seem to help it last night.
There is an office staff party on January 7th, spouses included. It is going to be a true potluck apart from the meat dishes. The bishop is bringing lamb and the hostess is providing goat and chicken. I think I will do some nice hot carrots, very plain as the bishop likes carrots the best. He has lots of dietary restrictions, like my husband, so I would like to take something I know he can eat for certain. My husband is having a bake-off with our English volunteer: he is making his British grandmother's trifle recipe and the volunteer is making a proper English cheesecake. They will try to convert each other while the rest of us just enjoy both! hahaha
Tomorrow I have to get an application mailed in to Services Canada about me receiving some kind of extra pension amount through OAS due to our low income. Sounds like it starts upon acceptance instead of having to wait until I am 65. It isn't the same as GIS...I don't think it is anyway....guess I will find out if it is when and if I am accepted. No doubt it will be taxable if it isn't some form of GIS and I will have to sock it away in RSP's instead of being able to use it occasionally toward something more fun than retirement savings, hahaha.
Ooh my, I can't stop yawning. I am not going to wait another half hour to go to bed. G'night all! Now that I know my son is safely across the border and on his way home, I think I will sleep very well indeed! 😫

To Friend Cheryl from Woodland
Hello my friend who I have not seen since 1973 at SAIT!
I received your lovely Christmas card and note today, in that beautiful handwriting I have always loved and I want to say thank you....for locating me again a few years ago and getting back in touch and sharing news of your life in the south country.
I just wanted to let you know that today I send off an envelope with a bit of a note and some postcards to remind you of Canada and the unique things you left behind here...although I know you do return on occasion, I thought you would get a kick out of them. hahaha
So, since I know you read my blog I thought it would be fun to let you know that even though I didn't get many Christmas cards out this year I was thinking of you too and am delighted to hear from you.
Have a fantastic 2018 with many blessings and a ton of fun! Looking forward to hearing from you again soon. 😃

My Home is Sparkling
Seriously, it is literally sparkling these days!
Between the coloured sparkles falling off Christmas cards, wrapping paper, decorations and our artificial Christmas tree, that have been tracked on the bottoms of our shoes throughout the suite, I can honestly say I have never lived in such sparkly premises!
Wow....will I ever get them all vacuumed up???
Christmas may indeed end up lasting “the whole year through”!!

Welcoming In Some Better Weather Along With A New Year! =)
The temperature outside began a slow rise during the night. When I woke up at 6:30am it was all ready only -12C!! That is a good 20 degrees warmer than it has been at that time of morning for the past 10 days or so. YES! Of course with the warm up we are also getting a bit of light snowfall that began just a few minutes ago at this time of late afternoon. The sun has disappeared and given way to snow clouds, but with warming temperatures I really don't care if it means we also get more snow. I have been ready for this change of weather practically since the first bitterly cold day. hahaha We are going from slightly below seasonal temperatures to slightly above seasonal temperatures. That is the right direction as far as I am concerned!! The warmer air made grocery shopping this morning so easy! The sun didn't disappear until I completed my ironing this afternoon so I was able to put creases into my pants without squinting and worrying about ending up with a double crease. hahaha
My husband has been back at work now for two days and all ready the diocese owes him two days off in 2018! hahaha We both went into the office on New Years Day as no one else would be there to interrupt. My husband created a new filing system for the literally thousands of unfiled papers and reports that have been sitting getting dusty in all manner of boxes and crates for the past several years. Then we began the huge task of actually putting all those papers into the new filing system. We were able to accomplish about 1/3 of the task in 6 hours of time. We need two more days in there alone to get it completed, so hopefully that can happen sometime this month. So, my husband worked on the stat holiday AND now his day in lieu as well, so that he and the bishop and a couple of others could pray through the entire diocese office (a monstrously huge 100 and some year old building that is 3 storeys high) and start working out the travel and meetings' schedule for all of them in 2018. At some point this year my husband has to take a couple of weeks of study leave and will likely be travelling either to Burundi or to England once again, as well as to Alberta for Provincial Synod and to Montreal, I believe, for the annual National Executive Archdeacons' Conference. Another busy year is all ready underway. We are still looking at our plans for annual holidays in June and hoping to get to see our son at his home south of the border.
It seemed very odd to have to get up so early again this morning after a week or so of being able to actually sleep in...which we did for three mornings running! Wonderful! Between getting good sleeps and the Zantac tablets, my husband's tummy issues have definitely improved over the past couple of weeks. Hopefully the Zantac treatment will turn out to be all that is required to improve his health.
Our son has had a stellar time in Montreal over the holiday season. He has been to myriad art museums and galleries and particuarly enjoyed the Leonard Cohen exhibit and St. Joseph Oratory. Montreal has many exciting places to see and things to do and he was thrilled to be able to have time to give it a good looking over. He enjoyed seeing his many friends there and they certainly kept him busy despite the miserably cold weather. Tomorrow he returns to NYC just in time for one of their most bitter stretches of weather as well. An Atlantic storm may hit the city on Thursday and so we are grateful he should arrive home well in advance of that possibility. Our prayers for him between now and tomorrow evening are that he will be able to cross the border with no problems and get himself back to searching for full time employment. Fortunately he remembered to take all the binders of visa information and other paperwork for re-entry. If you are of a mind to, please offer up a prayer with us that all will go smoothly once again. Thank you so much.
I am looking forward to going to a movie and then out for dinner with a friend tomorrow. We are going to see Wonder. I hope it is enjoyable, although I suspect it may be a bit of a tear jerker. Don't know where we are going for dinner, don't care, just happy to be going out with a friend. She is going for knee replacement surgery on Friday after many many months of pain, so I am very excited for her.
I need to remember to fast this evening right after dinner. It is nearly a week past the time I was to go in for my next set of cholesterol tests, but Christmas week was too difficult, what with company, altered lab hours and the clinic where my doctor practises being closed for the week. I have low expectations as to the results, sigh......one reason I wanted to do it prior to Christmas was because I knew there would be so many restaurant meals and other cheats over the holiday season. All I can do now is pray for a near miracle....and that my daily oat intake has been sufficiently helpful as to sway my doctor away from the idea of statins...not that she has been pushing them. She is showing a happy reluctance to get me going on the things.
It feels very odd to have my husband back at work. It is amazing to me, every time he has a few days away from the job, how quickly and happily I adjust to him being home with me every day. I am SO ready for him to be retired, but it isn't possible or appropriate quite yet. Hopefully not too many more years from now it will be able to happen.
I am cooking a spaghetti squash for dinner tonight. I think I will stuff it with hamburger cooked in garlic and ginger and onions, maybe some rice. I am tired of tomato based "things" and want to use up that hamburger just a bit differently than usual.
