Slushpot!

That is what it looks like outside this morning. Overnight we had about 7cm of heavy, wet snow. The outside temperature did not drop more than a few degrees below freezing overnight, so now the streets are a slushy mess and the sidewalks that have been cleared around our complex are still sodden with watery puddles. More snow is forecast for the weekend and the overnight temperatures at the beginning of next week will drop low enough to require plugging in the car’s block heater. This is typical March weather on the prairies. It is inconsistent and inconvenient and also thrilling because it all means spring is on the way.

Another harbinger of oncoming spring is the email we received this morning from the woman who planted tomatoes for us last year. She is preparing to plant again in a couple of weeks. We have ordered another Sungold plant and will return last year’s pot and trellis to her tomorrow afternoon. Of course there will also be a visit together. My husband is meeting with a new friend in the morning over at the university, so he will have a happy day too.

My husband’s clergy retreat is next week. He will be retreating with the same priests who participated in and led his pre-ordination retreat at about this same time ten years ago. TEN YEARS since his ordination into the Anglican priesthood! I can hardly believe it! The time has seemed to, as time does, alternately fly past and drag on and fly past again. It has been a crazy decade in many ways. This is the month of my husband’s birthday and our anniversary. (43 years married this month)

So, despite the weird pre-spring weather, this is often a happy time of good memories for us.

We will soon be on our way to pick up some friends to take to DarBar for their first ever taste of Indian food. They have had us over to their elegant, perfectly appointed home several times. We know they would not judge us on the state of our rental accommodation if we prepared a meal for them here, but neither of them would find it easy to have to cross the now slush and snow covered ice to get from the parking lot to our place, plus the pest control people are coming to seal the wall behind our dishwasher and under the kitchen sink today.  It is a good afternoon to be away from home enjoying a sumptuous meal.

Seems a good day with good plans and good friends is coming together.
